BPBD Synergizes to Increase Students' Understanding of Disasters

The Jakarta Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) supports the GEMBIRA (Gempita Belajar Bersama) program, one of which is collaborating with the Plan International Indonesia Foundation (Plan Indonesia) to strengthen child-friendly, gender-responsive and inclusive education efforts, especially in emergency situations.

Jakarta BPBD and Plan Indonesia held a visit with 10 schools assisted by the GEMBIRA Project to the BPBD Disaster Literacy Room and the Psychosocial Support Service car (Mobil Sikeling Pentas).

Jakarta BPBD Socio-Economic Recovery and Improvement Subgroup Chair, Salman Ansori said the 10 schools assisted by the GEMBIRA program had received disaster preparedness assistance from the Plan Indonesia Foundation in the form of Focus Group Discussions for disaster risk analysis mitigation, development of disaster preparedness SOPs, first aid training, training from the Fire Agency, disaster preparedness simulation training.

"Therefore, to increase student disaster literacy in 10 schools assisted by the GEMBIRA Project, Plan Indonesia will develop student visit packages to the Jakarta BPBD Disaster Literacy Room and Psychosocial Support Service cars (Sikeling Pentas Cars)," he expressed, Tuesday (8/6 ).

According to him, the aim of this visit was to enrich students' and teachers' understanding of disasters, to receive disaster education in the form of interactive vehicles.

"It also improves knowledge about first aid procedures, flood management, how to evacuate when a room is on fire, education for children to get to a safer place, earthquake training (self-rescue) and procedures for evacuating," he explained.

As for the information, the Jakarta BPBD Literacy Room presents an educational facility called the Disaster Communication, Information and Education (KIE) Room. This space is the first disaster education vehicle in Indonesia.

The KIE Disaster Room is one of the disaster literacy centers in the City of Jakarta which is a real form of public service innovation regarding disaster prevention and preparedness services. Literacy space as a means of increasing understanding and education on disasters in the form of interactive vehicles.

"By developing student visits to disaster literacy rooms, it is hoped that students and teachers will be better prepared to face disasters and minimize disaster risks. With this preparedness, hopefully, the school will become a school that is resilient in facing disasters," he explained.

Aside that, one form of Psychosocial Support Services provided by Jakarta BPBD is initial psychological assistance.

This initial psychological assistance is a form of first aid that provides psychosocial support to individuals, families and communities by prioritizing the individual needs of each survivor.

“This initial psychological assistance is provided as soon as possible after a traumatic event occurs. So, this is like first aid for psychological health," he added.

In providing psychosocial support services, Jakarta BPBD has an operational vehicle known as the Si Keling Pentas Car (Mobile Psychosocial Car to Entertain Survivors).

"This is a Counseling Room used for consultations for survivors who need further psychological assistance. This car also has an entertainment room which is equipped with a smart TV and sound system which is used for playing and singing together," he uttered.

Not only that, the car has a bookshelf and children's story books which can be used to encourage survivors to read.
