Heru Supports Disability-Friendly Creative Spaces in Jakarta

Acting Jakarta Governor, Heru Budi Hartono, opened the Jakarta Disability Art and Culture Festival at Kesenian Jakarta Building (GKJ), Central Jakarta, Wednesday (8/7).

This festival is held two days; today at GKJ and Teater Besar at Taman Ismail Marzuki (TIM) on Thursday (8/8).

Heru said children with disabilities should be able to be creative and explore their potential in art and culture through this event. He also appreciated Jakarta Provincial Culture Agency, Education Agency, and Social Agency who have provided facilities to develop their talents and potential.

"Thanks to all parties who have given our children opportunity to create, spend time with friends, and innovate in art and culture," Heru said, as quoted from Jakarta Provincial Government's press release.

Heru hopes similar program can be held again in Jakarta by involving children with disabilities. This program is able to increase their potential, creativity, and self-confidence to contribute in Jakarta development as a global city.

"I am very proud and happy to meet and gather with our creative children. I also thank the parents who have guided them with love, so that our children can be creative and innovative in this festival," Heru added.

Heru continued that Jakarta Provincial Government is committed to make Jakarta a disability-friendly city, such as presenting interesting activities, priority services on public transportation, and easy public facilities. He also requested that more events to be held in historical buildings in Jakarta such as GKJ. It aims to introduce its history to the younger generation.

"We will continue to provide disability-friendly facilities gradually. We want to provide comfort for disabled residents in Jakarta," Heru stated.

Meanwhile, Jakarta Culture Agency Head, Iwan Henry Wardhana, explained 154 participants attended the event namely Regional Dance with 111 participants, Single Drawing by 23 participants, and Solo Vocal by 20 participants. The festival juries are academics and practitioners.

"The winners of the festival will receive appreciation in the form of award certificates, trophies, and coaching money through Bank DKI. It is hoped that this festival can be a means of developing and preserving arts and culture for people with disabilities," he said.
