KPKP Agency Socializes Coral Transplantation on Tidung Island

The Jakarta Food Security, Maritime and Agriculture Agency (KPKP) and Seribu Islands KPKP Sub-agency held a socialization of coral transplantation in the Tidung Island Urban Village Office's Meeting Room, South Seribu Islands Sub-district.

Its socialization was attended by 50 representatives of the community and Community-Based Marine Protected Area (DPL BM) groups in Seribu Islands.

Young Expert Marine and Coastal Ecosystem Manager, Supriyadi Saleh said this socialization aims to increase public understanding and awareness to maintain the balance of the marine ecosystem and protect coastal areas from the impacts of climate change, such as rising sea levels and storm intensity.

"Jakarta's waters have quite high biodiversity and richness, it is very important to protect and preserve them," he expressed, Wednesday (9/10).

He explained coral reefs have an important role in climate mitigation, including reducing the energy of ocean waves because coral reefs can act as natural barriers to waves before they reach land.

Then it becomes an ecosystem resilience enhancer because healthy coral reefs support other marine biodiversity.

"Healthy coral reefs can strengthen people's livelihoods because fish will grow abundantly and the catch will be abundant. No less important, it can also be an attraction for tourists," he explained.

With this socialization, he hoped, the residents and members of the BM DPL could actively participate in implementing coral reef rehabilitation and also protecting it. The Seribu Islands Waters could be a place for developing area-based and sustainable coral reef cultivation.

"It is successful, the Seribu Islands region will be more resilient in facing climate threats and its people will be prosperous," he explained.

South Seribu Islands Sub-district Secretary, Windu Cahyaningsih appreciated Jakarta KPKP Agency and Seribu Islands KPKP Sub-agency which continued to urge and remind the public to maintain the sustainability of the marine ecosystem and prevent its damage.

She added coral reefs that grow healthily and beautifully will be an attraction for diving enthusiasts. It is hoped that more tourists will visit the Seribu Islands.

"Not only fishermen will benefit from the increasing number of fish, but also business people in the tourism industry will also feel the impact," she said.
