Acting Governor Teguh Monitors Channel Repair to Handle Flood in South Jakarta

Acting Jakarta Governor, Teguh Setyabudi monitored the repairing and widening of water channel on Jalan Adityawarman and Jalan Tirtayasa, South Jakarta , Friday (11/8).

This action was taken due to the narrowing of the water channels, resulting inundation around the two roads during heavy rain.

"I am here today to directly monitor the channel repairing and widening progress on Jalan Tirtayasa and Jalan Adityawarman. I already requested the repair to handle flood on these two roads," said Teguh, as quoted from Jakarta Provincial Government's press release.

Acting Governor Seeks Solution for Residents Under Bridge

There was a narrowing of the water channel which was previously two meters wide to one meter. The channel has now been widened, so that it can accommodate the flow of rainwater.

"We have dismantled the one meter bottleneck water channel. We also dug some of channels that are not deep enough. Some of channels' depth are 1.5 meter and 79 cm. The bottleneck of water channel caused flood on these two roads," Teguh added.

Teguh also instructed Jakarta Water Resource Agency together with South Jakarta Water Resource Sub-agency and South Jakarta Mayor checking the channel on Jalan Tirtayasa and Jalan Adityawarman. This is because, every year, the road in the area is raised, resulting in the space under the road becoming low.

"The channel widening on Jalan Adityawarman is targeted to complete in two weeks. For the repair of the channel on Jalan Tirtayasa, I will check today and tomorrow. Because, there is a possibility that there is an Integrated Utility Network Facility (SUJT) in the channel whose existence must be considered. We cannot arbitrarily cut the cables in the channel, since it has an impact on the community," Teguh continued.

Teguh will summon the cable owner operators to make it tidier by placing it inside the ducting that has been prepared by Jakarta Provincial Government. The existence of cables that are not arranged neatly, he added, can result in the accumulation of garbage, so that water cannot flow smoothly in the channels.

Acting Governor Teguh emphasized efforts to overcome flood in Jakarta cannot be done partially, but must be comprehensive, integrated, and systematic. The Jakarta Provincial Government will continue to cooperate with the central government to mitigate flooding in Jakarta

"We are seriously providing efforts to improve the flood handling in Jakarta since there are flood mitigation programs that can not be completed this year. Some of the programs must be started in 2025 and continued in 2026. We also to cooperate with Public Works Ministry to discuss about flood handling authorities," Teguh stated.

The monitoring was also attended by Acting Jakarta Water Resource Agency Head, Ika Agustin Ningrum and South Jakarta Mayor, Munjirin and their ranks.
