BPBD: Residents must Be Aware of Building Collapses During Rainy Season

The Jakarta Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) urges the public to be more alert to the potential for building collapse, especially during the rainy season.

People need to pay attention to the condition of their buildings

Based on data collected by the Jakarta BPBD Disaster's Data and Information Center (Pusdatin), 100 incidents of building collapses occurred in various Jakarta areas from 2022 to mid-2024.

Jakarta BPBD Acting Head Isnawa Adji said building collapses were generally triggered by extreme weather factors, such as heavy rain and strong winds. These factors increased the risk of damage to building structures that were already fragile or poorly maintained, and this risk was compounded if there was a shift in the ground.

"People need to pay attention to the condition of their buildings, especially those that are old or damaged, and immediately make repairs or strengthen the structure so that it does not cause danger," he expressed, Tuesday (11/12).

He also urged people to regularly check building conditions, especially for houses and buildings in disaster-prone areas. If they find a building at risk of collapsing, the public must immediately report it to the authorities for further action.

"It is important to take anticipatory steps, especially before the rainy season. Checking the condition of the roof, walls, and other supporting structures can prevent accidents or further damage," he explained.

His party would also continue to conduct intensive monitoring in the field and provide information related to potential disasters to the public. The public is asked to contact the BPBD emergency service via the number 112 Jakarta Siaga to report incidents of building collapse or structural damage.

He urged the public to always be vigilant and maintain safety, and to follow the latest information regarding weather conditions from the Jakarta BPBD which is sourced from BMKG, and the early warning map of land movement, which is sourced from PVMBG.

"With cooperation between the government and residents, hopefully, Jakarta residents can reduce the risk of accidents due to collapsed buildings," he said.
