BPBD Issues Early Warning of Potential Landslides in Jakarta

The Jakarta Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) issued forecast information on areas prone to landslides in Jakarta, following the high intensity of rainfall in the last few days.

Disaster management must be comprehensive

Seeing that, they urge urban village and sub-district heads, and residents to keep anticipating potential landslides during above normal rainfall during January 2025.

As quoted by the Center for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation (PVMBG), several areas in Jakarta have the potential for land movement based on the overlay results between the landslide vulnerability zone map and the monthly rainfall forecast map obtained from BMKG.

Some of these areas are in the Medium-High Zone with the potential for landslides. In the Medium Zone, land movement can occur if rainfall is above normal, especially in areas bordering river valleys, cliffs, road embankments, or if slopes are disturbed. Meanwhile, in the High Zone, old land movements can become active again.

Jakarta BPBD Head, Isnawa Adji asked the sub-district and urban village heads, along with the community, to actively check the conditions of their respective areas, especially those near river streams or with cliffs.

"Together with the TRC BPBD officers in each village, they conduct monitoring in case there are specific conditions that require handling," he expressed, Tuesday (1/14).

Thereby, residents are urged to intensify tree planting in areas prone to landslides and already lacking vegetation to prevent potential landslide hazards.

It can also be dome by making bronjong (gabions) and sheet piles if the land is sloping or has the potential to move or shift.

"This can be done independently or collectively to minimize more serious impacts if heavy rain occurs. The locations that we have mapped are coordinated with the SDA Agency in the field. Disaster management must be comprehensive," he explained.

Based on PVMBG, several areas in Jakarta are in the Medium-High Zone of potential for landslides:

1. Central Jakarta, covering the area of Menteng Sub-district

2. South Jakarta, covering the sub-districts of Cilandak, Jagakarsa, Kebayoran Baru, Kebayoran Lama, Mampang Prapatan, Pancoran, Pasar Minggu, Pesanggrahan, and Tebet

3. East Jakarta, covering the sub-districts of Cakung, Cipayung, Ciracas, Duren Sawit, Jatinegara, Kramatjati, Makasar, Matraman, Pasar Rebo, and Pulo Gadung.
