Ciliwung River Normalization Continued as City and Central Government Make a Deal

Jakarta Provincial Government together with Ministry of Public Works (PU) and Ministry of Agrarian Affairs and Spatial Planning/National Land Agency cooperate to handle flood in Jakarta by normalizing Ciliwung River.

Jakarta Governor, Pramono Anung said it has been agreed to continue the Ciliwung River normalization through the coordination meeting with Minister of Public Works (PU) and Minister of Agrarian Affairs and Spatial Planning/National Land Agency
"The detail will be explained by Water Resources Agency Head. The obstacles have also been solved," Pramono said, Thursday (3/13).

Jakarta Provincial Government will prioritize a humane approach to the affected residents in running the normalization. Moreover, the government will avoid evictions."We'll apply a humane manner to the residents, and we will guarantee that there will be no evictions," he added.
Pramono continued that this medium-term flood handling is fully supported by the Ministry of Agrarian Affairs and Spatial Planning/National Land Agency. This effort may reduce the flood potential in Jakarta up to 40 percent.
"If the normalization can be run smoothly, it will reduce the flood potential by 40 percent," he continued.
Minister of Agrarian Affairs and Spatial Planning/Head of National Land Agency, Nusron Wahid stated his side will provide land procurement for Ciliwung River normalization along 16 kilometer from Pengadegan up to Rawajati. The total area of land procurement is approximately 11 hectares or 16 km along the Ciliwung River.
"We have created a timeframe for land procurement and certification schemes have also been discussed," he stated.
He targets the land procurement to complete in May, so the physical construction can start in early June 2025.
"Hopefully the construction can start in June because the land is clean and clear," he added.
Nusron explained that the Ciliwung River normalization is run to maintain the ecosystem and control flood in Jakarta and its surroundings. He hopes the society's economy will not be disrupted by the flood through this program.
Minister of Public Work, Dody Hanggodo hopes the Ciliwung River normalization to run well in order to reduce flood potential in Jakarta and its surroundings.
"No more flood starting this year. That's our hope," he stated.
