Super New Moon Triggers Tidal Wave, Legislator Reminds

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency issued an early warning related to tidal flood at northern Jakarta that is predicted to occur on April 13-27, 2025.

This increase in flood potential is triggered by the super new moon phenomenon which causes the maximum sea water level to rise.

Jakarta City Council Commission D Member, Bun Joi Phiau reminded residents to prepare in facing potential of tidal flood.

Jakarta Coastal Residents Urged to Beware of Tidal Floods

"Residents living in northern area, especially at prone areas, must identify evacuation place to safe their families immediately," he said, Tuesday (4/15).

Bun also reminded residents to secure their property and documents.

Bun added Jakarta Provincial Government is constructing dike at several prone to tidal flood areas.

"The locations are Muara Angke and Muara Karang," he added.

He supports the dike construction and hopes it will cover the residents from tidal flood.

"It is the right effort to protect northen Jakarta residents from the tidal flood," he continued.

Bun also encourages Jakarta Provincial Government to identify northern North Jakarta areas prone to tidal flood impact.

"Hopefully the dikes can be added up to give more protection for residents," he admitted.

He also emphasized the importance of preparedness by providing water pumps, both stationary and mobile, so that they can be used immediately when tidal flood occurs.

"Moreover, other mitigative measures also need to be strengthened, such as placing sandbags around residents' houses and other important buildings," he stated.
