Jakarta Launches Urban Farming Festival 2025

The Jakarta Provincial Government, through the Food Security, Marine, and Agriculture (KPKP) Agency, officially launched the Urban Farming Festival 2025 at Nyi Ageng Serang Building, Setiabudi, South Jakarta, on Thursday (7/10).

Running until July 12, the event marks an important moment for Jakarta in strengthening its commitment to building a green city and realizing household food security.

Head of Jakarta KPKP Agency, Hasudungan Sidabalok, said this year's festival is more serious and strategic compared to the previous years.

"This is our fourth Urban Farming Festival. For the first time, it has been officially budgeted in the City Budget (APBD), showing our serious commitment to its real impact on the community," he mentioned.

Despite Jakarta being a metropolitan city with limited land, he emphasized that urban farming offers a practical solution for food resilience.

Hasudungan explained that currently, 98% of Jakarta's food supply comes from outside of the city, with only 2% produced locally. To improve this, the city must boost local productivity through urban farming.

"With the growth of urban farming, residents are expected to be more self-reliant in meeting household food needs while also contributing to a greener and more productive environment," he added.

Hasudungan targeted 1,000 visitors during the festival's three-day run, considering the high public interest in the event, particularly the free cat sterilization program, which alone is expected to draw around 500 people. 

"That's just from the cat sterilization participants, excluding general visitors, tenants, committee members, and KPKP staffs. This shows the high exposure and interest in the event," he stated.

Raising the theme "Global Synergy Toward a Sustainable Green City", this year's Urban Farming festival features various activities such as bazaars, competitions, seed distribution, talk shows, education, and the participation of eco-friendly public figures.

"The event is expected to serve as a collaborative platform between the public, government, and private sectors to promote urban farming as part of the urban lifestyle," he said.
