Gov Pramono Emphasizes City's Role in Global Diplomacy at PBB Forum

Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung attended the opening session of the High Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) at the United Nations Headquarters (PBB), New York. He was accompanied by Foreign Deputy Minister, Arrmanatha Nasir.

We need to upgrade ourselves as a global city

Pramono's presence at this forum marked a historic moment for the first time, as a Jakarta Governor was officially invited by the PBB to participate in the formulation of the global sustainable development agenda.

The HLPF is a strategic forum for world leaders, diplomats, and local officials to evaluate progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), as well as discuss various global challenges.

Pramono Emphasizes Transparency and Self-Protection as Keys to Preventing Corruption

Jakarta in this forum reflects international recognition of the transformation of the capital into an inclusive, resilient, and sustainable global city.

On that occasion, he emphasized the importance of cross-city and international collaboration in addressing strategic issues, such as urbanization, climate crisis, and social inequality.

"Jakarta is no longer just an administrative capital. We need to upgrade ourselves as a global city. Therefore, it is important for us to be active in international diplomacy," he expressed, Tuesday (7/15).

He also conveyed that Jakarta is currently implementing several important initiatives, including a transition to clean energy, digitalization of public services, and strengthening community-based green economy.

Jakarta's participation in this official UN forum aligns with the "Jakarta as ASEAN Hub" initiative, which promotes the capital city's position as a center of cooperation and innovation in the region. This step also reinforces Jakarta's diplomatic efforts as a global city that is adaptive and collaborative.

Foreign Deputy Minister, Arrmanatha Nasir demonstrated the full support of the central government for local government involvement in global forums such as the HLPF. This is concrete evidence that Indonesian diplomacy is now also being carried out by subnational entities that are increasingly recognized internationally.

The participation of the Jakarta Governor in this forum also strengthens Indonesia's position as a country committed to mainstreaming sustainable development. Additionally, this step opens broader opportunities for other cities in Indonesia to actively participate in global city networks such as C40, UCLG, and ICLEI.

About 37 countries are scheduled to present Voluntary National Reviews (VNRs) at the forum, including Indonesia. This report will outline achievements, challenges, and best practices in implementing the SDGs across various sectors and levels of government.
