Status Shift of PAM Jaya to Speed Up Water Service Expansion

Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung said the initiative to change PAM Jaya's status from Reegional Public Water Company into a Regional Public Corporation (Perseroda) is intended to support the company's growth, especially in securing investment.

"Both Vice Governor and I have carefully thought this through for the benefit of PAM Jaya,"

"Turning PAM Jaya into a Perseroan is simply intended to help it grow, especially in terms of investment," Pramono said at Pesanggrahan Water Treatment Plant (IPA) in South Jakarta, Tuesday (9/9).

He ensured that the decision to change PAM Jaya's status was carefully considered with Vice Governor Rano Karno. He was confidence that the transition would bring positive outcomes for the company.

"Both Vice Governor and I have carefully thought this through for the benefit of PAM Jaya . There's no intention whatsoever to weaken the company through this change. I believe this step will make it even better," he shared.

According to him, the transition is in line with global trands, where not all major projects must rely entirely on regional budgets (APBD).

"Today's global trend shows that not every project needs to be fully funded by the regional budget," he added.

Previously, during the Jakarta Council (DPRD) Plenary Meeting, Pramono delivered the Draft Regional Regulation on the transformation of the legal entity of Jakarta Regional Public Drinking Water Company (PAM Jaya) into a Regional Public Corporation (Perseroda) named Air Minum Jaya.

This is in line with the Jakarta Government's commitment to developing Jakarta into a modern, livable city that guarantees its residents' basic rights, including the right to access clean water.

However, one remaining challenge is that the city's piped drinking water services have yet reach all segments of the population.

The change of legal status aims to accelerate the provision of clean water services across Jakarta. The Governor is optimistic that the target of 100 percent piped water coverage can be achieved by 2029, a year ahead of the original 2030 goal.

Pramono hopes this transformation will improve the company's performances, effectiveness, efficiency, and competitiveness, while also ensuring that all Jakarta residents have access to safe and clean drinking water.

"The executive proposes the conversion of PAM Jaya's legal status from Perumda to Perseroda as a strategic step toward enabling non-APBD financing," he said.
