Rano Presents Challenges and Potentials of Jakarta at PNLG 2025

Jakarta Deputy Governor, Rano Karno, outlined the challenges and potential of Jakarta in advancing an inclusive blue economy during a dinner at the PEMSEA Network of Local Government (PNLG) 2025 event at Indonesia Kempinski Hotel, Menteng, Central Jakarta, last night.

"As the host, Jakarta has responsibilities and opportunities with its extensive coastline, islands, and coastal waters," he expressed.

According to him, PNLG, which has been present since 2006, has played a vital role in implementing the Sustainable Development Strategy for the Seas of East Asia.

This forum of 10 countries serves as a platform for collaboration among local governments, universities, civil society, and the private sector to advance an inclusive blue economy.

Rano explained that Jakarta, which is also a coastal and island region, has great potential to develop a blue economy through fisheries, tourism, clean energy, and environmental awareness.

He also admitted that Jakarta faces real challenges from climate change, pollution, and urban pressures. These issues even affect daily life, such as the impacts of flooding, coastal erosion, and fragile marine ecosystems.

Hence, he hoped that the PNLG Forum 2025 could serve as a reminder of the importance of integrating climate action, nature conservation, and sustainable energy.

"May this forum bring about innovation, strengthen partnerships, and be beneficial for society and the seas that unite us," he continued.

Meanwhile, Sangihe Islands Regent, Michael Thungari, appreciated and thanked the Jakarta Government for facilitating this activity.

According to him, the various activities held would provide insights and references for the management of coastal areas in his region.

Even, the various issues faced by Jakarta as a coastal area are not much different from those of its original region.

Therefore, various visits and related materials on the management of coastal areas and Seribu Islands, which are scheduled in the activities, are very beneficial for learning.

"The materials presented greatly support environmental improvement, for the future of our children and grandchildren," he stated.
