Jakarta Prepares for Extreme Weather by Deploying Water Pumps

The Jakarta Provincial Government is ready to face the potential for extreme weather and heavy rainfall as forecasted by the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).

"We've received a warning from BMKG about the possibility of extreme rainfall in the next day or two,"

Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung noted that one of the measures taken is ensuring that all flood control infrastructure, particularly water pumps, are on standby.

"We've received a warning from BMKG about the possibility of extreme rainfall in the next day or two, and we've made preparations, including Jakarta's water pumps," he said at Borobudur Hotel, Central Jakarta, on Tuesday (9/30).

He detailed that nearly 1,200 pumps owned by the Jakarta Provincial Government are ready for operation, consisting of 600 portable pumps and 600 static pumps.

Pramono remains optimistic that flooding can be addressed swiftly, as long as the heavy rainfall occurs only in Jakarta and is not worsened by upstream flow from areas such as Bogor.

"All pumps are on standby. If the rainfall is only in Jakarta and not from upstream, I'm confident it can be handled quickly," he asserted.

Still, Pramono hopes the rainfall intensity remains within manageable limits. To support this, the Jakarta Government has instructed mayors to deploy rainbow troops to ensure drains stay clean.

"Hopefully the rainfall stays below 250 mm. Even 200 mm is within our capacity. Most importantly, we've also instructed the mayors to send their rainbow troops to clean the drains," he shared.
