Environment Agency Asked to Investigate Microplastic Rainwater

Jakarta City Council Deputy Chairman, Basri Baco responded on microplastic rainwater finding. He appealed Jakarta Provincial Government to handle this problem seriously.

respond this matter seriously

"We need to respond this matter seriously," he said, Tuesday (10/21).

According to him, Jakarta City Council has requested Jakarta Environmental Agency to conduct research and investigation.

City Government is Investigating BRIN's Findings on Microplastics in Rainwater

"We need to investigate and re-examine why this happened. If it's serious and could endanger humans, then there's no choice but to respond immediately and take action as quickly as possible," he added.

Baco continued that the illegal burning of plastic waste could be one of the triggers of this problem.

"The ministry also mentioned that microplastics could be caused by the large amount of waste being burned. But that's still preliminary; we're still awaiting the results of our own research," he continued.

He stated that Jakarta Governor, Pramono Anung, has shown great concern for the issue of waste management, including plans to build an Intermediate Treatment Facility (ITF) as a long-term solution to reduce the accumulation and burning of plastic waste.

"We will start planning the construction of the ITF next year. In accordance with the President's order, Jakarta must start first, then other provinces will follow," he stated.

The land for the construction of the ITF is ready, and the project will be realized without using City Budget funds or a tipping fee system.

Baco hopes that the ITF projects in Sunter and Bantargebang can be realized soon, especially amidst fiscal constraints due to reduced regional revenues.

"Hopefully we can start immediately to meet the deadline," he hoped.
