Jakarta's Global City Ranking Rises to 71st

Jakarta Governor, Pramono Anung appreciates Jakarta's rise in ranking in the Global Cities Index 2025 released by the international institution Kearney, from 74th to 71st out of 158 cities.

"This is the result of hard work with the community. Thanks to careful planning, swift execution, and data-driven evaluation," said Pramono, Wednesday (10/22).
According to Kearney's report, Jakarta excels in business activity (up three positions) thanks to public transportation connectivity (91–92 percent) and regional trade, supported by the MRT/LRT project. Human capital (up two positions) has improved thanks to workforce accessibility and vocational training.
"We achieved this in 5–7 months due to a solid planning-implementation-evaluation cycle, such as real-time monitoring of transportation usage," he added.
However, Jakarta still needs to pursue dimensions of information exchange (digital adoption), cultural experience (sustainable tourism), and political engagement (global participation). Kearney highlighted three key enablers namely renewable energy, urban resilience (flood management, green spaces), and AI-ready talent.
The Jakarta Provincial Government is currently working on this through solar panel programs, river normalization, and digital training.
Meanwhile, Special Staff to the Jakarta Governor, Head of Social Communications, Chico Hakim, conveyed the need for public participation to achieve future targets.
"The Governor believes that future achievement targets will be difficult to achieve without public participation," he said.
Jakarta now ranks 17th in the world for public transportation, surpassing Kuala Lumpur and Manila, with utilization up 25 percent.
"This achievement is the beginning of a journey toward becoming a top 50 global city. The government can not do it alone, and the Governor's special message is for the Jakarta Provincial Government to continue involving residents, businesses, and academics in innovating for an inclusive and resilient Jakarta," he stated.
