Anticipating Extreme Weather, Jakarta Optimizes Flood Control Infrastructure

The Jakarta Water Resources Agency (SDA) is intensifying various anticipatory efforts for floods during extreme weather conditions that may occur.

Mobile pumps are used to reach flood or puddle locations

Flood risk mitigation steps include optimizing flood control infrastructure such as preparing pumps and maintaining water bodies to ensure they function optimally.

Jakarta SDA Agency Head, Ika Agustin Ningrum said, preparation of flood control facilities and infrastructure is also ongoing, such as preparing pumps, including stationary pumps, mobile pumps, and sluice gates, to operate optimally before and during flood management.

Based on data up to November 15, 2025, there are 560 stationary pump units spread across 191 locations. Additionally, there are 627 mobile pump units distributed across five administrative regions of Jakarta.

"Mobile pumps are used to reach flood or puddle locations that stationary pumps cannot access," she expressed, Thursday (11/20).

To optimize the drainage function, dredging has been conducted on flood control infrastructure such as rivers, reservoirs, lakes, and ponds.

Based on data up to November 15, 2025, the volume of dredging in rivers and reservoirs, situ lakes, and ponds in five Jakarta administrative cities has reached 756,000 cubic meters.

Aside that, her agency has heavy equipment to support the dredging, consisting of 258 excavators and 449 dump trucks.

"Gradually, we have also implemented Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) in the construction of dams, reservoirs, and embung in Jakarta," he explained.

Here are 1,876 dredging points currently being conducted:

• East Jakarta: 786 points

• West Jakarta: 290 points

• North Jakarta: 546 points
