BMKG Issues Early Warning for Strong Winds in Jakarta Waters

Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Tanjung Priok Maritime Meteorology Station has issued an early warning for strong winds in Jakarta on December 18 and 19, 2025.

"Strong winds are likely to occur from afternoon to evening,"

BMKG urges the public, especially those living in vulnerable areas, to remain alert to the potential impacts of strong winds. The conditions may lead to fallen trees, collapsed billboards, and damage to non-permanent buildings, particularly in coastal areas.

"Strong winds are likely to occur from afternoon to evening, reaching speeds of 20-25 knots or around  37–46 km/h, equivalent to Beaufort Scale 5–6," stated BMKG's early warning notice in an official release on Thursday (12/18).

Jakarta, BMKG Strategize on Disaster Anticipation

According to BMKG, the regions at risk in Jakarta's waters include the Thousand Islands and Jakarta Bay.

BMKG forecasts wave heights of 0.5–1.25 meters (low category) in Jakarta Bay and the waters off Cirebon. Meanwhile, waves between 1.25–2.5 meters (moderate category) are likely in the waters around Thousand Islands.

Furthermore, BMKG warned of high risks to certain types of vessels regarding maritime safety. Fishing boats are at risk when wind speeds exceed 15 knots and wave heights go beyond 1.25 meters.

Wind speeds above 16 knots and waves higher than 1.5 meters pose a risk to barges, while ferries are at risk when winds reach over 21 knots and waves exceed 2.5 meters. Larger vessels such as cargo or cruise ships may encounter danger with winds topping 27 knots and waves more than four meters.

BMKG also advised the public to avoid sheltering under large trees and billboards, secure outdoor belongings, and ensure their surroundings are safe. Fishermen and vessel operators are urged to pay attention to mooring distances and stay updated with the latest weather and wave information from BMKG.

People are urged to remain calm, stay composed, and ensure safety by following BMKG's official weather information.
