Weather Modification Deemed Successful in Anticipating End-of-Year Extreme Weather

Jakarta Governor, Rano Karno assessed that the weather modification operation (OMC) run by Jakarta Regional Disaster Handling Agency was successful in anticipating extreme weather on New Year's Eve.

"I'm grateful that it rained since December 28th, but not as much as we feared. Because our weather modification was successful, it was a remarkable collaboration," said Rano, Monday (1/5).

Rano explained that before the end of last year, he visited the Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG). At that time, the BMKG explained the potential for extreme weather as a result of forecasts based on observations they had made.

Rano admitted he gained a better understanding from the visit and is working to take preventative measures. One example is collaborating with the Jakarta Regional Disaster Handling Agency (BPBD) to implement the OMC.

"OMC is implemented when rainfall has exceeded the limit or is heavy enough and has the potential to trigger a disaster," he explained.
