South Jakarta: Zero Tolerance for Harassment in Public Spaces

South Jakarta Mayor Muhammad Anwar has called on public facility managers to help create a city free from harassment.

Speaking at an awareness event at the Martha Christina Tiahahu Literacy Park on Tuesday, Anwar stressed that safety for women and children is paramount.

"Whether it's an apartment complex, a mall, or a public park, those in charge must ensure a secure and respectful atmosphere," he expressed, Tuesday (1/27).

The event is part of a broader city initiative to strengthen protections for vulnerable groups in public spaces.

Public spaces must meet clear safety standards, including better lighting, on-site staffing, and responsive reporting systems, the Mayor noted.

He called for mandatory training for all personnel on how to prevent and manage cases of harassment.

"We have a zero-tolerance policy for harassment. Every report must be handled seriously and quickly, ensuring the victim’s perspective is prioritized," he added.

Anwar called for a 'unified front' involving social services, immigration, police, and the public to maintain a safe environment for women and children.

He highlighted a recent success story at Blok M Hub and the Literacy Park, where staff acted decisively to detain a perpetrator of sexual harassment. This proactive response, Anwar noted, serves as a model for how facility managers can safeguard the public.

"Our vision for South Jakarta goes beyond infrastructure development. We are striving to be a compassionate city that prioritizes the safety and dignity of our vulnerable populations," he added.

South Jakarta PPAPP Sub-agency Head, Rizky Hamid highlighted the importance of making public facilities safe and welcoming for all residents.

He called on managers to ensure their spaces are accessible and responsive to any reports of harassment.

"This shouldn't just be a discussion; it needs to be a trigger for real action in the areas you oversee. Let’s make South Jakarta a safe haven, especially for women and children," he stressed.
