A Pair of Giraffes in Ragunan Zoo Still in Quarantine

The management side of Ragunan Zoo (TMR) Pasar Minggu has imported a pair of giraffes from Taronga Zoo, Sidney, Australia.

The process takes 14 days, but it will be extended until 3 months if the animals' condition is still unstable

"Many visitors miss to see giraffes in Ragunan Zoo, but in future they will see it again as we've gotten giraffe collection sent from Australia that currently have been 10 months old," said Public Relation of Ragunan Zoo, Wahyudi Bambang, Tuesday (8/18).

However, he continued, as the both of giraffes are still in quarantine process, so visitors need to be patient to see the animal. "Interaction with the giraffe is still limited by temporary closing as they are still in quarantine. The process takes 14 days, but it will be extended until 3 months if the animals' condition is still unstable," he explained.

TMR Develops Android-Based Application

The Zoo side has given the animals special names. For the male one is named Dirgah, as for the female one named Ayuri 70. "Because this is one of gifts for the 70th Indonesia's Independence Day, and given by the Jakarta Governor," he expressed.

He told during quarantined the giraffes will be given vegetables as in Australia. As for climate adaptation is not different with the  country that also including to tropical country. "We assign trained staffs to do care observation correctly," he told.

Giraffe itself is the African endemic even hoofed mammal and the tallest animal species live on land. Male one's height is up to 4,8 until 5,5 meters and weight 1,360 kilograms. As for the female one is usually lighter and shorter. The animal's age if it lives in healthy habitat could reach 35 years old.
