Pramono Backs Government Policy Limiting Children's Social Media Use

Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has expressed full support for the central government's plan to limit social media use among children under 16 years old.

...is a positive step to protect the younger generation

The policy is stipulated in Minister of Communication and Digital Regulation No. 9 of 2026, which will take effect on March 28, 2026.

Legislator Supports Restricting Social Media Access for Students

"I will fully support it. In my view, the ministerial regulation is a good policy," he stated at Jakarta City Hall on Monday (3/9).

According to Pramono, the regulation is a positive step to protect the younger generation from the negative impacts of digitalization. However, he acknowledged that implementing the rule in practice could present challenges, as social media has become part of many children's daily lives.

"Even though implementation in the field may not reach 100 percent, for some children social media has already become part of their culture," he added.

Pramono noted that many children today rely heavily on smartphones and gadgets. The restriction is expected to help shift their focus to more beneficial activities for their growth and development.

"However, with this restriction, I believe it will bring positive benefits, especially for the children themselves. Nowadays many children are truly addicted to gadgets," he emphasized.
