Jakarta Ranked Second Safest City in ASEAN

Jakarta ranked second among the safest cities in Southeast Asia in 2026, according to the Global Residence Index report released on January 16, 2026. The city sits just behind Singapore, the top-ranked city.

Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung expressed both surprise and pride over the achievement. However, he stressed that the result was not solely the work of the Jakarta administration, but also the outcome of collective awareness and cooperation among residents in keeping the city safe.

"Out of 13 ASEAN capital cities, Jakarta usually ranked sixth or seventh. Now Jakarta ranks second, with Singapore in first place," Pramono added.

He noted that one of the city's policies contributing to the achievement was opening the National Monument (Monas) grounds for public activities, as well as hosting major religious celebrations such as Christmas, Lunar New Year, Nyepi, and Eid al-Fitr.

These events reflects strong tolerance and diversity in public spaces, which he described as one of Jakarta's key strengths. It has also fostered a shared sense of belonging among residents toward the city.

"Even a minister—who happens to be a friend of mine in Singapore—told me, 'How is it that Jakarta's Lunar New Year celebrations surpass Singapore's?'" he said.

The governor called on all stakeholders to maintain this momentum and continue preserving stability and tolerance in Jakarta.

For context, the Global Residence Index report released on January 16, 2026, ranks Singapore as Southeast Asia's safest city with a safety index of 0.90, followed by Jakarta at 0.72.

Jakarta is followed by Bangkok, Vientiane, Hanoi, Kuala Lumpur, Phuket, Ho Chi Minh City, Phnom Penh, and Manila.
