Pisangan Baru’s Transformation Park: A New Hub for Public Recreation

The vacant lot at Jalan Pisangan Baru Timur RT 05/15 in Matraman, East Jakarta, has undergone a complete makeover. Now a well-organized and vibrant public space, the formerly blighted area is recognized as the Pisangan Baru Transformation Park—a new favorite destination for locals to unwind and snap photos.

The slum-like impression has now vanished

Pisangan Baru Urban Village Head, Nuraenie stated that the approximately 155-square-meter plot was previously occupied by illegal parking and street vendor activities. These conditions prompted the sub-district government to conduct a comprehensive revitalization.

"The reorganization took place from January until the end of March. The slum-like impression has now vanished, replaced by an area that is more organized, lush, and appealing to the community," she expressed, Wednesday (4/22).

She explained that the area’s revitalization involved nine PPSU personnel.

"The name 'Transformation Park' was chosen to symbolize the shift from its previous substandard state into a public space that is more comfortable and beneficial for the community," she clarified.

According to her, the park is also equipped with a Jaga Jakarta command post and seating facilities made from lightweight concrete blocks (hebel) that residents can use to relax during the morning or late afternoon.

Another attraction is the vibrant murals adorning the park's walls. Various illustrations—ranging from butterflies and the "three pillars" symbol to cars, students, and a pair of sharks—enhance the park's artistic appeal.

"Not only that, but there are also advisory messages and pantun (traditional rhymed poetry) that encourage residents to maintain the cleanliness of the environment," she noted.

She added that to beautify the atmosphere, various ornamental plants such as aloe vera, red coleus (miyana merah), suji trees, and sambung dewa (Gynura procumbens) have been planted throughout the area.

"We plan to add more photo spots to further enhance the park's appeal," she revealed.

Meanwhile, a local resident, Rumiyati (38), expressed her delight at the transformation, noting that the area, which was once a slum, has now become a comfortable place to unwind.

"It looks much better and more pleasing to the eye now. Residents can sit back and enjoy the atmosphere. The boundary wall of SMKN 5 Kebon Sereh has also been decorated with murals, making it much more attractive than before," she concluded.
