Jakarta Lights-Out Initiative Slashes Carbon Emissions

Jakarta’s Energy Saving and Carbon Reduction campaign for World Environment Day 2026, held on Saturday (6/13) at 8:30–9:30 PM, produced a significant environmental outcome.

Extinguishing the lights for 60 minutes goes beyond symbolism

Drawing on data provided by PLN Disjaya, this concerted sixty-minute effort to preserve the environment and save energy mitigated carbon emissions by 60.14 tons of CO2e. Further, this action realized electricity savings of 75.18 MWh and a reduction in utility costs amounting to Rp 108,693,752.

Jakarta Environmental Agency Head, Dudi Gardesi, stated the action underscores the Jakarta administration’s dedication to promoting energy efficiency and encouraging residents to play an active role in mitigating greenhouse gas emissions.

"Extinguishing the lights for 60 minutes goes beyond symbolism. It serves as a reminder that simple steps taken together can produce a concrete environmental impact. From modest habits, we can drive a major transformation for a healthier and more sustainable Jakarta," he expressed, Monday (6/15).

He further explained that the activity is grounded in Governor’s Instruction No. 14/2021, a directive governing periodic lights-out events aimed at energy efficiency and carbon mitigation in Jakarta.

In his view, the resulting reduction in emissions underscores how changes in energy usage patterns can deliver measurable outcomes, provided they are sustained and involve collective participation from all sectors of society.

"This achievement stems from collaborative efforts—ranging from building operators and entrepreneurs to local communities and individual citizens who joined the cause by switching off lights and idle electronics during the campaign,” he remarked.

His agency is committed to ensuring that energy conservation evolves from a momentary gesture into an integral pillar of the community’s everyday life.

He added that straightforward measures—such as deactivating idle electronic devices, adopting energy-efficient lighting, and exercising prudent electricity consumption both at home and in the workplace—are deemed capable of making a pivotal contribution to carbon emission reduction.

"The consistency of millions of people taking these small steps together will yield a monumental impact on the quality of Jakarta's environment. Preserving the earth and striving for cleaner air transcends governmental responsibility; it is a communal endeavor for the entire public," he concluded.
