Rano Leverages APOS 2026 to Strengthen Jakarta-Netflix Collaboration

Capitalizing on the Asia Pacific Video Operators Summit (APOS) 2026 in Nusa Dua, Bali, Jakarta Vice Governor Rano Karno sought to foster communication and forge partnerships with key stakeholders in the entertainment and tech sectors. During the event, he conducted a strategic meeting with Netflix.

We envision a robust partnership with Jakarta

On that occasion, Netflix elaborated on its ten-year journey within the Asia-Pacific market, specifically highlighting Indonesia. The strength of indigenous storytelling, coupled with extraordinary viewer enthusiasm, has proven to be a vital catalyst for the streaming giant’s continuous expansion.

Public Policy Netflix Asia Pacific Director, Ruben Hattari, remarked that the remarkable strength of content and viewership in Southeast Asia is significantly fueling Netflix’s growth. Furthermore, he is highly optimistic that the prowess of local storytelling—exemplified by global hits like Gadis Kretek and Abadi Nan Jaya—is capable of further accelerating Netflix’s business trajectory within Indonesia.

"Looking ahead, we envision a robust partnership with Jakarta that encompasses both film production and talent development," stated Ruben.

The engagement then transitioned into a private session with Netflix Asia Pacific Vice President, Andrew Ure and Netflix’s Senior Director of Production, Sung Q Lee.

This meeting was aimed at scaling up Netflix's production volume in Jakarta, following the successful release of the Netflix Original Film Tygo: Extraction in the first quarter of 2026.

"We're very glad to meet you Mr. Vice Governor Rano, and we really thanks for your support in production Tygo Extraction, we're very amaze with your ambition towards Jakarta as City of Film we believe that Jakarta can be the best shooting locations in South East Asia," said Netflix Asia Pacific Vice President, Andrew Ure.

Echoing these sentiments, Netflix’s Senior Director of Production, Sung Q Lee, expressed his pleasant surprise at the unwavering support the Jakarta Government provided during the filming of Tygo: Extraction.

"Since it's not our country we don't know who to talk dan discuss about this, Jakarta government was helping us to do the shooting smooth for maybe 50 days in Kota Tua Jakarta it was amazing thank you," Sung Q Lee expressed.

Netflix’s commitment to collaborating with the Jakarta government is not solely driven by business objectives. Rather, this synergy unlocks vast potential for local talent cultivation, job growth, and the strengthening of the tourism industry, alongside community-centric programs that provide lasting positive contributions to society.

Vice Governor Rano Karno thanked Netflix for their trust in choosing Jakarta for international film projects.

He emphasized that such recognition proves Jakarta is increasingly regarded as a city well-equipped to emerge as a global-scale creative industry center.

"I am deeply appreciative of Netflix’s trust. This represents more than just an ambition—it is a cornerstone of my vision for the creative economy to drive real, measurable economic growth for Jakarta," he stated.

Consequently, the Jakarta government is highly supportive of this enduring partnership. This synergy is designed to foster both film production and the strategic growth of the industry as a whole.

"We are inviting Netflix to play a supportive role and attend the Jakarta Film Summit 2026, scheduled for October 2026," he concluded.

Jakarta Tourism and Creative Economy Agency Head, Andhika Permata highlighted that the film sub-sector, which acts as a catalyst for music, fashion, and culinary arts, is set to flourish as more international films are produced in Jakarta.

In the near future, at least three Netflix films and series are expected to begin production in the city. To support it, Jakarta and Netflix will co-host a bespoke film talent development program aimed at equipping the local workforce to meet global industry standards.

"We wholeheartedly endorse the 'Jakarta Cinema City' initiative and are operating with total commitment, as we believe the creative industries will serve as a powerful engine for Jakarta’s economic growth. Further, this will undoubtedly trigger an influx of domestic and global tourists to the city," he affirmed.
