East Jakarta City Parks and Forestry Sub-agency Head Dwi Ponangsera commended the swift response of Jatinegara Police and Jatinegara Satpol PP in investigating the theft, which caused losses to assets owned by the Jakarta Provincial Government.
Jalan Kosambi Now Adorned with Murals and Lush Greenery"We extend our gratitude and appreciation to the Jatinegara Police and Jatinegara Satpol PP for their swift action in tracking down the suspects and arresting one of those involved in the theft of the green belt's protective fence," he said on Wednesday (8/7).
Dwi expressed hope that the remaining four suspects, who are still at large, would soon be arrested and held accountable under the law.
"We also hope the stolen fence can still be recovered and returned to us. This public facility is a government asset that we all have a responsibility to protect," he asserted.
Meanwhile, Jatinegara Police Precinct Criminal Investigation Unit Head AKP Eko Bayu Suharto said the investigation began after a video of the theft went viral on social media. The suspects' faces were clearly visible in the footage, making it easier for police to identify and track them down.
"We have arrested one suspect so far. We are still pursuing the others, and we have already identified them," he noted.
The suspect, identified as CAT (30), is originally from Balige, North Sumatra, and had been living beneath the Kampung Melayu Flyover before his arrest at around 1 PM on Tuesday, Eko said.
According to Eko, CAT's role was to break down the fence and transport the stolen metal using a bajaj before selling it to a scrap metal collector in Senen, Central Jakarta.
He added that the suspect has been charged under Article 477 of the Indonesian Criminal Code (KUHP), which carries a maximum prison sentence of seven years for theft.
"We are continuing to pursue the four remaining suspects. We are also expanding the investigation to identify and take action against anyone suspected of receiving or purchasing the stolen property," he said.
