Jakarta Taps MSMEs and Creative Economy to Secure Global Top 50 Spot

The Jakarta government, through its Industry, Trade, Cooperatives, and MSMEs Agency (PPKUKM), has emphasized that empowering MSMEs and the creative economy is a cornerstone strategy in the city’s roadmap to join the world’s top 50 global cities by 2030.

We continue to cultivate an environment for entrepreneurs to thrive

Jakarta PPKUKM Agency Head, Elisabeth Ratu Rante Allo identified MSMEs as the backbone of Jakarta's inclusive and competitive economic growth. Amidst the city's positive financial performance, she stressed the importance of the real sector in maintaining long-term sustainability.

"Reflecting the vision of Governor Pramono Anung, we continue to cultivate an environment for entrepreneurs to thrive. We want to see more business owners who are creative, innovative, and quick to embrace new technologies," she expressed, Saturday (7/11).

She pointed out that a global city is not defined by infrastructure and investment alone, but by the strength of its community-based economy.

According to her, MSMEs serve as the fundamental bedrock of a creative ecosystem that is capable of creating jobs, driving innovation, and boosting the added value of local products.

"Through the JakPreneur program, we're working to integrate business capacity development. We continue to provide business mentoring, facilitate access to capital, expand market reach, and accelerate digital transformation," she elaborated.

According to her, the number of assisted businesses under the Jakarta government continues to rise steadily. As of July 10, 2026, JakPreneur recorded 422,617 total members, with a remarkable 81.56% (344,704 members) currently active in the program.

"The surge in active businesses indicates that our entrepreneurial landscape is becoming more resilient. It provides the necessary foundation to accelerate an economy fueled by innovation and creative industries," she remarked.

The creative economy has become the backbone of Jakarta’s assisted MSME network. According to the latest figures from the PPKUKM Agency, the culinary industry remains the largest contributor, accounting for nearly 47% of the total with 198,581 entrepreneurs.

The ecosystem also boasts a strong presence in fashion (24,116 businesses) and crafts (9,073), alongside growing numbers in arts, design, photography, and even game development.

"This rich variety of subsectors showcases Jakarta’s creative resilience. It’s a clear indicator that the creative economy is becoming a vital source for the city’s future prosperity," she noted.

Beyond enhancing business capacity, the PPKUKM Agency is fast-tracking the digital transformation of MSMEs. To date, 278,155 JakPreneur participants—or 65.82%—have successfully digitized their operations, while 144,462 participants (34.18%) are currently undergoing the mentoring process.

"Digitalization is a strategic move to broaden market access, boost business efficiency, and enhance the overall competitiveness of MSMEs," she emphasized.

Referring to the latest statistics, Allo believes that a strong MSME foundation is the catalyst for a world-class creative ecosystem. This synergy is expected to realize Governor's ambitious goal for the capital.

"We continue to execute the Governor’s vision by making MSMEs the driving force of an inclusive and innovative global city. We're on track to secure Jakarta’s place in the global top 50 by 2030," she asserted.
