Jakarta Supports Social Media Restrictions for Children

The Jakarta Provincial Government has expressed full support for the central government's policy restricting social media access for children under the age of 16.

Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung said the city administration is committed to implementing the policy to protect children from the negative effects of social media use.

"Jakarta will fully implement the central government's policy, particularly the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs' regulation restricting social media use for children below a certain age," Pramono said at Jakarta City Hall on Monday (7/20).

Pramono said the policy must be implemented consistently to ensure children receive proper protection.

"We fully support the policy, and it must be implemented consistently. It should not end after the initial phase," he asserted.

As part of efforts to strengthen child protection in the digital space, the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education (Kemendikdasmen) has issued Circular Letter No. 18/2026 on restricting gadget use in schools.

The policy is aligned with Government Regulation (PP) No. 17/2025 on Electronic System Governance for Child Protection (PP Tunas) and Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs Regulation (Permen Komdigi) No. 9/2026. The two regulations are intended to safeguard children's physical and mental development from the negative impacts of digital technology.

Pramono expressed support for the Komdigi and other relevant ministries in strengthening the child protection system. He also noted that Jakarta has been designated as a national pilot city for implementing the policy.

"Jakarta strongly supports the policies introduced by the Komdigi and the ministry responsible for women's and children's protection. That is why Jakarta has been chosen as the national pilot city," he emphasized.

Jakarta was designated as a pilot city for the integrated women and child protection services program through a joint decree signed by several ministries and the National Police.

The program, which stems from the Law on Sexual Violence Crimes (UU TPKS), aims to establish an effective, integrated, and equitable protection system, with initial case handling targeted within 24 hours of a report being filed.

Jakarta was selected as the national pilot city because of its complex social landscape and well-developed infrastructure. The Jakarta Provincial Government will optimize public facilities that are accessible and welcoming for women, children, and people with disabilities.

In addition, digital platforms such as JAKI and Jakarta Smart City will be used to help ensure victims' rights are protected and assistance is delivered quickly and effectively.
