North Jakarta Maps Out Solutions for Muara Baru Water Seepage

The North Jakarta Water Resources (SDA) Sub-agency has moved quickly to respond to reports of water seepage along Jalan Muara Baru Ujung, in front of the Pluit Pump Station in Penjaringan Urban Village.

North Jakarta SDA Sub-agency Head Heria Suwandi said field inspections showed that the seepage was caused by high seawater pressure, worsened by land subsidence.

According to Suwandi, the condition has left the ground level in the area lower than the sea level.

"We also found that the NCICD seawall has been illegally used as a mooring site for fishing boats. This activity places additional stress on the seawall structure and could potentially cause damage," he said on Thursday (8/6).

He explained that the seepage is believed to be caused by seawater infiltrating through gaps in the seawall.

The problem has also been worsened by heavy vehicles, including trucks, that pass over the main pump pipeline every day, weakening the road's structural integrity.

According to him, previous cement injection (grouting) work had been carried out but did not produce optimal results because the water continued to find new paths to escape.

"To prevent more extensive damage, we have proposed several preventive measures through cross-agency coordination involving relevant ministries, SDA Agency, Public Works Agency, KPKP Agency, and Transportation Agency," he said.

According to Suwandi, the proposed measures include limiting vehicle tonnage on the road in front of the Pluit Pump Station, preventing the illegal use of the NCICD seawall as a boat mooring site, and permanently repairing leakage points along the seawall.

As a temporary measure, SDA personnel will create a small channel at the seepage site to direct the water into the drainage system, preventing it from pooling on the road.

"We will create a channel so the seepage flows directly into the drainage system. This will prevent water from pooling on the roadway and help maintain the safety and comfort of road users," he highlighted.

Suwandi added that addressing the seepage requires the support and commitment of all stakeholders because the causes are complex, ranging from natural factors to human activities.

He also urged all parties, including residents and fishermen, to help protect the seawall by using it properly.

"Collaboration from all parties is essential to ensure the seawall continues to function effectively in protecting coastal areas. This will help minimize the risk of damage while safeguarding public safety," he said.
