NCICD Seawall Seen as Key to On-Time, Maximum Flood Protection

Jakarta City Council Commission D Member, Judistira Hermawan voiced confidence that the construction of the National Capital Integrated Coastal Development (NCICD) seawall in North Jakarta will be completed on schedule, significantly bolstering flood mitigation efforts by 2029.

We are confident

He stated that the project's success is anchored by a strong commitment from the Jakarta administration and the council to tackle both tidal surges and inland flooding.

"We are confident. With the administration and the council working in lockstep, we are prioritizing river revitalization and coastal defenses to bring Jakarta’s flooding under control," he expressed, Wednesday (1/6).

He noted that the NCICD project is a collaborative venture between city and federal authorities. The infrastructure plan includes a division of labor where the Jakarta administration is responsible for one segment of the seawall, while the central government spearheads the rest of the planned length.

He also touched upon the recent seawater inundation that struck North Jakarta’s coastal neighborhoods. In response, the Jakarta Water Resources Agency (SDA) deployed emergency crews to mitigate the surge and stabilize the affected areas.

"There is a firm commitment from the administration to finish the 16-kilometer seawall stretch. The council is standing firmly behind this project to ensure that coastal flooding is permanently brought under control," he explained.

He noted that while beautification efforts to transform the seawall into more than just a concrete barrier are welcome, they should not overshadow the primary mission of public safety.

"Public safety is non-negotiable. Creative use of the space for educational purposes is a good secondary goal, but our core objective remains building a robust defense against coastal surges to protect those living along the shoreline," he closed.
