Bidadari Island Becomes Model for Waste Sorting and Processing

Bidadari Island in Untung Jawa Urban Village, South Thousand Islands Sub-district, has been designated as a pilot site for implementing Jakarta Governor's Instruction No. 5 of 2026 on the Waste Sorting and Processing Movement at the Source.

The initiative is part of the Thousand Islands Regency's efforts, together with the private sector, to develop a Zero-Waste Island concept in Jakarta.

Thousand Islands Regent Muhammad Fadjar Churniawan said Bidadari Island was selected as a pilot site for resort-wide waste management because it is located in Untung Jawa Urban Village, which has also been designated as a pilot site for waste sorting from upstream to downstream.

"The strategy is no longer simply about collecting and transporting waste, but about strictly sorting it at the source," he said on Wednesday (8/12).

Fadjar explained that organic waste is processed into liquid organic fertilizer (POC), while plastic waste is processed into plastic pellets or sent to waste banks for recycling.

According to him, Bidadari Island could eventually serve not only as a tourist destination, but also as a waste management education center for students, university students, and the general public.

"Visitors can see firsthand how an island resort can manage its waste sustainably and independently," he said.

He added that PT Sea Breeze Indonesia, which manages Bidadari Island, is working with the Indonesia Menuju Hijau community to implement independent waste management from upstream to downstream.

Meanwhile, Thousand Islands Environment Sub-agency Head Achmad Hariadi said waste management on Bidadari Island faces challenges not only from tourism activities but also from waste washed onto the shore.

"Over three months, the total amount of washed-up waste in the area can reach 900 tons," he noted.

To address the issue, the Thousand Islands Environment Sub-agency is working with the Mas Jos (Jagonya Olah Sampah) community to provide independent waste processing facilities.

Plastic waste with no economic value is shredded using a machine to reduce the volume of waste transported to the landfill.

"The program, which has been running for two weeks, is expected to inspire other islands in the Thousand Islands, both residential and resort islands," he said.
