Rano Karno: Transjakarta Emerging as the Backbone of Jakarta’s Transportation

With Transjakarta expanding its services further into the Greater Jakarta area (Jabodetabek), Jakarta Vice Governor Rano Karno expressed strong optimism that the bus rapid transit system is becoming the public's primary and most trusted mode of transport.

According to Rano, the strategic expansion aims to encourage commuters from satellite cities to switch from private vehicles to public transit when entering the capital.

"Transjakarta’s annual ridership has now reached 1.7 million passengers," he expressed, Friday (8/14).

He believes that Jakarta’s strength is inextricably linked to the prosperity of its surrounding regions. He noted, the growing reach of Transjakarta and its rising ridership numbers demonstrate a synergy between the capital and its satellite cities.

"In 2016, we were just scratching the surface of Jakarta. Now, by spanning Jabodetabek, we have built a transportation network that is not only wide-reaching but incredibly resilient," he explained.

He shared this vision while attending a donation ceremony for five Trans Care units—specialized vehicles designed to enhance mobility for those in need. This donation was provided by the Permata Foundation at the BHI ASTRA Transjakarta Bus Stop, symbolizing a strong partnership between the government and the community in building a more inclusive city.

Rano welcomed the five new Trans Care vehicles, noting that they significantly bolster the city's specialized fleet for the disabled community—now totaling 20 units.

"This contribution from the Permata Foundation is a commendable act of support for our city's public service, We are truly grateful for this partnership," he continued.

Reflecting on the program’s growth, Rano explained that when Transjakarta Care first launched in 2016, it operated with just five vehicles. The fleet eventually grew to 15 units, which have been serving approximately 70,000 passengers with disabilities annually.

"This expansion proves that Transjakarta is not just a bus service; it is the reliable backbone of Jakarta’s daily life," he added.

Transjakarta President Director, Welfizon Yuza, further explained that Trans Care is a dedicated, ongoing initiative designed to provide persons with disabilities with seamless access to the broader Transjakarta network.

The impact of the service is clearly reflected in the data. In 2025, Trans Care served 71,598 passengers, marking a significant 16.1% increase compared to the previous year.

"May this spirit of cooperation grow even stronger. By working together, we can provide a transportation system that is inclusive, sustainable, and humane—one that truly respects the dignity and needs of every passenger," he closed.
