Commission B Pushes for Better, Safer, and Cheaper Travel in Seribu Islands

Jakarta Legislative Council Commission B Vice Chairman, Wahyu Dewanto expects PT Transjakarta’s new role in managing the Seribu Islands' transport network to drive a major upgrade in safety, comfort, and accessibility.

The possibility remains open for air travel in the future

According to Dewanto, Transjakarta’s expertise in delivering professional and budget-friendly land transport will be the key to improving the quality of sea travel in the archipelago.

"Principally, the government aims to provide high-quality, reliable, comfortable, and low-cost transportation for Seribu Islands people," he expressed, Sunday (8/30).

He stressed that bringing Transjakarta on board is not an excuse to hike prices. He demanded an overhaul of current standards, prioritizing safety, on-time performance, and strategic accessibility for the community.

"Fares shouldn't rise just because Transjakarta is taking over. Our challenge to them is clear: be better, be cheaper, and be more precise. We need punctuality and a service that is right on target for the people," he explained.

According to Dewanto, Transjakarta may require a specialized subsidiary for sea transport operations.

This strategic move is expected to streamline logistics and promote tourism, fostering greater socio-economic growth in the Seribu Islands archipelago.

He added that the potential for air transport services is also on the table, as the Jakarta Bylaw Formation Agency (Bapemperda) reviews amendments to the current Bylaw No. 4/2014.

"The possibility remains open for air travel in the future. The goal is for Transjakarta to thrive on all fronts—land, sea, and air," he stated.
