Use of Masks and Goggles should Be Intensified on Public Transportation

Vice Chairman of Commission B of the Jakarta City Council, Wahyu Dewanto, urged the Jakarta Provincial Government to strengthen health warnings in all public transportation following the impact of volcanic ash from the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau which has begun to be felt in the capital.

According to Wahyu, the use of masks and goggles needs to be continuously and widely promoted in public spaces, including on Transjakarta corridors and other public transportation modes. This measure is crucial to help protect residents from potential exposure to volcanic ash while going about their daily activities and using public transportation.

"This is all being run to ensure the safety and health of Jakarta residents," he said, Monday (9/7).

He assessed that monitoring of Mount Anak Krakatau's activity and its potential impact on Jakarta must continue.

In addition, mitigation measures and public education also need to be strengthened to reduce health risks from exposure to volcanic ash.

Wahyu also asked the Jakarta Provincial Government to ensure the availability of masks on the market. He stated that coordination with relevant agencies and institutions is necessary to anticipate potential shortages.

"The availability of masks needs to be continuously monitored and pursued, including by collaborating with relevant agencies and institutions," he stated.

Wahyu also warned of the potential for unreasonable increases in mask prices if the eruption continues for a longer period. If shortages occur and are followed by excessive price increases, this situation must be addressed immediately.

"If there is a shortage and excessive price increases, of course an investigation and mitigation efforts can be made, especially if this incident is expected to last longer," he emphasized.
