Pramono Departs for New York to Discuss Climate and Food Crises

The Jakarta Governor, Pramono Anung, accepted the invitation of the Mayor of New York City, Zohran Kwame Mamdani to attend the Urban 20 (U20) Mayors Summit 2026 on September 19–21, 2026 in New York, United States.

Jakarta is coming to New York to contribute

The U20 is the G20 engagement group, a forum for leaders of major global cities to share perspectives and recommendations on urban policy. The U20 2026 cycle is co-chaired by the cities of New York and Los Angeles. Jakarta has long been a member of the U20 and continues to participate in intercity collaboration to address shared urban challenges.

Pramono to Decide Soon on Proposed Ragunan Zoo Admission Fee Adjustment

In an invitation letter dated July 27, 2026, Mayor Mamdani invited Governor Pramono to join world city leaders in New York, coinciding with the opening of the United Nations General Assembly. Over three days, city leaders will discuss solutions to the housing crisis, climate change, human mobility, and economic opportunity, as well as formulate the U20 2026 Communiqué.

Pramono is also scheduled to hold a bilateral meeting with Mayor Zohran Mamdani on Sunday, September 20, 2026. The meeting will discuss opportunities for direct cooperation between Jakarta and New York, particularly in the areas of public transportation and clean air, water management and coastal resilience, waste management, and food affordability.

Through this meeting, the Jakarta Provincial Government wants to encourage inter-city cooperation to become a concrete program that benefits the people of both cities.

During the same visit, Governor Pramono is scheduled to speak at a Heat Roundtable with C40 Cities, Harvard University's Salata Institute for Climate and Sustainability, and the Atlantic Council's Climate Resilience Center. The forum will bring together city leaders, including the mayors of Freetown and Paris, to exchange experiences on urban heat challenges and climate resilience.

In the sports and tourism sector, Pramono is scheduled to sign a Letter of Intent with New York University (NYU). This collaboration is aimed at supporting the development of the sports and tourism industry, including marketing and event management, through education and international collaboration.

The Governor's Special Staff for Public Communication, Chico Hakim, said the invitation places Jakarta at the same table as other global cities currently formulating urban agendas.

"Mayor Mamdani's invitation letter clearly positions housing, climate, mobility, and economic opportunity as shared endeavors for major cities. Jakarta is coming to New York to contribute, learn, and bring home collaborations that can be realized into programs for residents," said Chico, Friday (9/18).

This series of visits provides an opportunity for Jakarta to strengthen its role in global city cooperation, while also bringing home knowledge and partnerships that can be applied to improve services and the quality of life for Jakarta residents.
