Jakarta Calls on Residents to Save Energy with 60-Minute Lights-Off Action

The Jakarta Provincial Government is calling on residents to join a simultaneous 60-minute lights-off action from 8:30 to 9:30 PM on Saturday (9/19) to encourage energy saving.

When simple steps are taken together and consistently, they can have a greater impact

The action will take place at several locations and buildings across Jakarta as part of World Ozone Day, observed every September 16, and aims to encourage residents to help protect the environment.

Jakarta's Simultaneous Blackout Reduces Carbon Emissions

Lights will be turned off along several major and arterial roads and at Jakarta landmarks, including the National Monument (Monas), Arjuna Wiwaha Statue, Welcome Statue at the Bundaran HI, Heroes Monument, General Sudirman Statue, and the Jakarta City Hall complex.

Jakarta Environment (LH) Agency Head Dudi Gardesi said the action serves as a reminder that caring for the environment can start with simple habits, such as using electricity wisely.

"Through this one-hour action, we want to encourage people to make energy saving part of their daily lives. Everyone can play a role, whether at home, at work, or at their business. When simple steps are taken together and consistently, they can have a greater impact," he said on Saturday (9/19).

He noted that a similar action held on Saturday (6/13) to mark World Environment Day saved 75.18 MWh of electricity, equivalent to Rp 108,693,752 in cost savings. It also resulted in an estimated reduction of 60.14 tons of CO₂e emissions.

The results show that joint efforts by the government, building managers, businesses, and residents can lead to measurable energy savings. The Jakarta Provincial Government hopes this spirit of collective action will continue to grow and become part of residents' daily lives.

"Support from residents, building managers, and businesses is very important to this movement. Let's make it a habit to turn off lights and electronic devices when they are not in use. By using energy wisely, we can save money while also helping protect Jakarta's environment," he said.
