Commission D Urges River Normalization, Housing Revitalization to Fix Mampang Floods

Jakarta Legislative Council Commission D Chairman Yuke Yurike has stressed that flood mitigation along the Poncol segment of Mampang River in Kuningan Barat, South Jakarta, requires long-term planning, citing the area's low-lying topography and dense riverbank settlements as major bottlenecks for normalization work.
This remains a long-term challenge
According to Yuke, the neighborhood remains vulnerable to recurring floods due to its geographical layout. Further, the high-density residential area—nestled between high-rises and business districts—suffers from restricted access, hindering heavy machinery needed for river dredging operations.
These constraints restrict normalization efforts to a few accessible spots, making a quick fix to the area's flooding issues unfeasible.
Yuke Yurike Urges Residents to Take Good Care of RTH"This remains a long-term challenge. While the measures taken so far will hopefully mitigate flooding, the issue can't be resolved overnight," she expressed, Friday (10/30).
She explained that flood management must be tackled upstream through the construction of water retention facilities such as the Kebagusan Embung (artificial lake). The infrastructure is expected to hold back water flow and regulate discharge heading toward the Mampang and Krukut rivers.
She also advocated for riverbank housing revitalization paired with proper relocation options for impacted families.
"Relocating residents to decent housing is key to clearing room for river normalization and constructing larger retention basins where needed," she added.
While backing the city administration's flood control strategy, Yuke explained a completion date for local normalization work remains up in the air given the complex spatial hurdles.
"Through proper coordination and thorough planning, we believe the flood issue can be resolved incrementally," she explained.
Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung previously inspected normalization work along Mampang River's Poncol segment to mitigate flood risks before peak rains arrive in late November.
The project, executed by the Water Resources Agency (SDA) with city council support, covers key waterways such as Ciliwung and Krukut rivers alongside broader neighborhood revitalization and road improvements.
