Pramono Gathers Forkopimda to Tackle Flood Mitigation

Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung met with the Jakarta Regional Leadership Forum (Forkopimda) at Jakarta City Hall on Thursday (11/5), to discuss disaster mitigation ahead of the rainy season.

We just wrapped up discussions on flood preparations

The talks centered on emergency readiness among city agencies and stakeholders in anticipating extreme rainfall and potential flooding in the coming months.

“We just wrapped up discussions on flood preparations, welcoming Jakarta’s five-century milestone, and initiatives to make Jakarta greener and cooler,” Pramono told reporters.

The meeting discussed mitigation measures and disaster preparedness among regional government officials and all stakeholders to anticipate potential extreme rainfall during the upcoming rainy season.

“We just concluded a meeting covering matters related to flood preparedness, preparations for the city’s 500th anniversary, and efforts to make Jakarta greener and cooler,” he explained.

Citing data from the BMKG, he said rainfall is expected to peak in February. While the current El Niño climate pattern will likely shorten the rainy season, it will not diminish overall precipitation.

Consequently, the risk of extreme downpours and flooding is set to rise, especially from January through June.

“That’s why our meeting drilled down into the specific responsibilities and collaborative support needed from every institutional stakeholder in Jakarta,” he added.

He added that the Jakarta High Prosecutor’s Office (Kejati) will provide legal assistance throughout the river normalization process across several waterways in the capital.

Through December, the administration will continue normalization works, focusing primarily on the Ciliwung, Angke, Krukut, and Cakung Lama rivers.

He added that West Jakarta is projected to see the highest rainfall. As such, the Jakarta provincial government is currently upgrading infrastructure to anticipate potential water overflows in the area.
