Underprivileged People will Get 10 Cubic of Water per Month

Jakarta Vice Governor Basuki T Purnama urged the city-owned tap water company PAM Jaya to hold a water-saving campaign in order to suppress the wasting of water in the future. The company was also instructed to limit water consumption up to 10 cubic per month for underprivileged people.

People have to pay Rp 10,000 if they used more than 10 cubic of water per month. As for water usage below that, the price remains Rp 1,050

“In Jakarta, water leakage rate reaches 40 percent. That’s why people should start saving water from now,” stated Basuki at City Hall, Wednesday (5/28).

According to Basuki, water quota refers to the survey result of the World Health Organization (WHO). In the survey mentioned that the average of water consumption for underprivileged people is reaching 10 cubic per month.

Palyja Disconnects Illegal Water Connection

“WHO has done survey. But why underprivileged people still use 10-30 cubic of water per month. That’s why we stressed PAM Palyja to immediately take over, because we must connect the pipes faster,” he asserted.

From WHO survey result, Basuki instructed two private parties cooperating with PAM Jaya to begin limiting water supply to customers categorized as lower-income people. It aims to make people appreciate clean water and create discipline.

Even so, he acknowledged that there are still underprivileged people who need clean water more than 10 cubic per month. But if they wanted to buy water over quota, they should be willing to pay more.

People have to pay Rp 10,000 if they used more than 10 cubic of water per month. As for water usage below that, the price remains Rp 1,050,” he said.

Basuki told that water price set for Rp 10,000 does not exaggerated and is quite affordable. The reason is because all this time people are deemed able to buy expensive water sold by water cart sellers for as much as Rp 25,000 per cubic.

“People nowadays commonly buy water Rp 25,000 per cubic from water cart sellers. That is more expensive. That means, water price by Rp 10,000 is still not expensive. The most important thing is they are not being wasteful,” he uttered.
