Textile Museum Keeps Ancient Betawi Batik Collection

Textile Museum on Jl. Aipda KS. Tubun, Kota Bambu Selatan Urban Village, Palmerah Sub-district, West Java, keeps the ancient Betawi Batik collection.

Batik fabric has 2.5 meters long and 1 meters wide

Batik has been designated as one of the world heritages by UNESCO. This ancestor's work become a pride for Indonesia. Such as batik fabric which pattern is known as Buketan pattern. This batik pattern is dominated by green, blue, and pink colors.

Textile Museum staff, Ardi Haryadi said, ancient batik fabrics were granted to the museum on May 15, 1976.

"Batik fabric has 2.5 meters long and 1 meters wide. This is included as batik tulis (batik made using direct painting technique) which is needed a very long time to make it," he said, Thursday (7/13).

According to him, manually batik making is needed at least three months until one year to finish depend on pattern difficulty level.

He added that his side conducts a special handling and treatment for batik fabrics in Textile Museum thus it will be not damaged easily.

"We store batik collection in room with 20-25 Celsius degree with humidity around 50-60 percent," he closed.

For information, Textile Museum also keeps the oldest collection in form of Cirebon Palace's flag which is made in 1777. This historical object was granted by Gusti Putri Mangkunegoro VII as one of founders of Textile Museum in 1976.
