Regular ID Card Expires This Year Causing Residents Uneasy

Hundreds of thousands of residents in Central Jakarta began to fret after they knew the validity period of regular ID card would expire this year. Moreover, until now, they have not had an electronic ID card or e-ID card. Based on the latest data, there are only 626,845 or 74.39 percent out of 842,690 residents already have e-ID card.

Head of Jakarta Population and Civil Registration Department, Purba Hutapea explained many people who do not have e-ID card is due to overlapping authority between Home Ministry with Jakarta Provincial Government.

According to Hotib, Head of Population Registration Section for Central Jakarta Population and Civil Registration Sub-Department, ID card printing was stopped unilaterally by the Home Ministry at the end of December 2013.

Therefore, the Home Ministry was asked to immediately solve e-ID card problem as soon as possible thus residents could have the ID card in 2015. "If the problem was done, all residents can already have e-ID card next year," he exclaimed.
