Anies Emphasizes Importance of Transportation in Developing Cities

Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan, opened a discussion entitled "Sustaining Transit Investment in Asia's Cities". He emphasized the importance of transportation in developing cities.

In future 75 percent of people must switch to public transportation

"More than 70 percent of the world's population will live in the city in 2050. The solution is transportation development," he expressed, at the location, City Hall, Monday (4/15).

He explained that transportation issues in Jakarta was the movement of people who had used almost 48 percent of public transportation in 1998 yet decreased by 33 percent due to private vehicle use. It should be solved through integrated and connected public transportation throughout Jakarta areas.

"In future, 75 percent of people must switch to public transportation and the rest use private vehicle. It all requires a massive investment and a consistent policy in all sectors," he uttered.

According to him, mass public transportation development through MRT, Bus Rapid Transit (BRT), and Light Rail Transit (LRT) is under process and requires investment to reach the completion target in the next 10 years.

"We want international development agencies to share proven best practices from around the world which aims to attract more people use public transportation," he exclaimed.

It brings the value of unity and becomes a place of community interaction regardless of its background.

"Through this meeting we hope to have new breakthrough for better development," he hoped.

As for the information, it was attended by Knowledge Management and Sustainable Development Asian Development Bank (ADB) Vice President, Bambang Susantono; PT MRT Jakarta President Director, William Sabandar; PT Adhi Karya Operation II Director, Pundjung Setya Brata; and Finance Ministry's Director General of Fiscal Balance, Astera Primanto Bhakti.
