At Least 1,000 Green Mussels to Be Spread on Ancol Sea This Year

PT. Pembangunan Jaya Ancol plans to spread at least 1,000 kilograms of green mussels or perna viridis in the middle of the sea this year to improve Ancol's sea water quality.

PT. Pembangunan Jaya Ancol's Head Corporate Communications, Rika Lestari mentioned that green mussel is known as natural sea water filter. This plan is expected to restore Ancol sea water quality by spreading this species in Ancol sea.

"Our plan is to do Ancol coast restoration by introducing green mussels as natural filter. Hopefully, it helps to filter the sea water and makes its quality better," she conveyed, Monday (7/8).

Sea World and Ocean Dream Samudra Ancol Conservation Manager, Yus Anggoro Saputra stated, 1,000 kilograms of green mussels can filtrate 10,000 liters of dirty sea water per hour and eliminate 2,020 mg of Nitrogen in water. In other words, it can filtrate around 1,680,000 liters of sea water per week.

"Green mussel is one of marine biota that acts like a filter. We will not only spread the green mussels itself, but also its shells in the middle of the sea thus other green mussels and fish can use it as a media to lay their eggs," he explained.
