Bike Lane Trial, Anies Wants Jakarta as Bike-Friendly City Pioneer

Building a sustainable urban system that is environmentally friendly and humanistic, makes the Jakarta Provincial Government continue to innovate to create public transport system facilities and services as well as an environmentally friendly non-motorized transportation mode that is safe and comfortable for its citizens. One of them is to prepare a bicycle path along the road that has an even odd policy.

But we hope that in the future it will not only be 63 km but all the majority of places in Jakarta can have bicycle lanes

To test the bicycle path, the Jakarta Governor, Anies Baswedan, along with his staff cycled from the Velodrome, East Jakarta to the City Hall Office, Friday morning (9/20). "We were both trying (bicycle lane) and it was fun for me to go back on my bicycle again and the bicycle I used was the bicycle I used to go to college," Governor Anies said when he arrived at the City Hall Office, as quoted by the PPID press release, Friday (9/20).

The Governor explained that Jakarta Provincial Government will conduct a Dissemination of the Bike Path Design Trial which will be held on September 17, 2019. While the first phase of the trial will begin on September 20, 2019 to November 19, 2019. The trial area will be carried out on the route network of route bicycles with a total length of 63 km and are divided into 3 phases covering the areas of East Jakarta, Central Jakarta, South Jakarta and West Jakarta.

"But we hope that in the future it will not only be 63 km but all the majority of places in Jakarta can have bicycle lanes. The first phase of the asphalt will be replaced, waiting for the asphalt to be replaced in a while, after that the markers will be installed so that they do not work twice, "explained Governor Anies.

Furthermore, Anies wants Jakarta to be a pioneer city that is friendly to bicycling with lanes that are prepared specifically for bicycles. If the residents use the path for cycling, it will have an impact on improving the quality of the environment in Jakarta. "So I invite all citizens of Jakarta to look at bicycles not as mere sports but as a means of transportation, so we prepare the path for habituation and encourage more who use bicycles for daily activities. We hope Jakarta will become a pioneer city that is environmentally friendly, including the use of bicycles," he advised.

Meanwhile, Heather Thomson who is a representative of The Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP) appreciated the move of the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government to provide a 63 km bike path and echo the Friday for Future campaign. "It is amazing to see Jakarta making a move on the right track. I think Jakarta has done a good job with a line of biking where it will protect the cyclists," he said.

The "Bike Path Design Trial" is a collaboration of ITDP Indonesia, the representation of Jakarta cyclists, and technical agencies in the Jakarta Provincial Government to realize a permanent bicycle path at the end of 2019 that can be enjoyed by Jakartans. The three phase phases consist of Phase 1 including Medan Merdeka Selatan - Jalan Pemuda on 20 September 2019 - 11 October 2019, Phase 2 along Jalan Jenderal Sudirman - Jalan RS Fatmawati Raya on 12 October 2019 - 1 November 2019 then Phase 3 along Jalan Tomang - Jatinegara on 2 November - 19 November 2019.
