150 People Register to Be Bicycle Lane Volunteers

Jakarta Transportation Department (Dishub) cooperates with Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP) to recruit Relawan Jalur Sepeda or 'Bicycle Lane Volunteer'. There are 150 registrants and 60 of them are in Phase 1 who guard bicycle lane from Jalan Pemuda until Jalan Medan Merdeka Selatan.

Jakarta Dishub Head, Syafrin Liputo expressed his appreciation for communities who are willingly become a part of Relawan Jalur Sepeda to support Jakarta Ramah Bersepeda Program that leads Jakarta into bicycle-friendly city.

"I convey my gratitude and appreciation for them who have support air quality in Jakarta by using eco-friendly transportation," he conveyed, Wednesday (10/9).

He explained, his side has installed road signs along bicycle lane and cone as the border line to mark bicycle lane on the road. Moreover, his side also instructed personnel from Transportation Sub-department to guard the lane by conducting cycling patrol.

"Our personnel are deployed to help volunteers in doing their job since volunteer is considered effective in socializing and encouraging other people to use bicycle lane," he mentioned.

In the other hand, ITDP Communication and Partnership Manager, Fani Rachmita informed, registration for volunteer is still open. People who are interested can access itdp-indonesia.org/relawansepeda website.

"Bicycle lane volunteer should be older than 18 years-old and it is opened for cyclist or non-cyclist. Importantly, they need to commit to work based on shift work schedule, which is on Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday," she explained.

Volunteer's job is recording motorcyclist or cyclist's behaviors towards bicycle lane and cyclist counting.

"There are three shift work hour options. First is morning shift from 6 AM to 9 AM, second is 12 PM - 2 PM, third is 4 PM - 7 PM. Each person can take two shifts at a time according to their activities," she conveyed.

Volunteers for the first phase have started to work since two weeks ago. Most of them are employees, college students, high schoolers, whose age between 18-70 years old.

"Related to the second and third phases, we have coordinating with Dishub for bicycle lanes that have been installed with border line. The second phase will be announced at October 12," she asserted.
