Health Department: Beware of Pneumonia Outbreak Caused by Coronavirus

Jakarta Provincial Government through Health Department reminds all Jakartans to beware of severe pneumonia outbreak caused by Novel Coronavirus (nCoV) that began in Wuhan, China, since December 31, 2019.

If you are sick, reduce activities outside and limit the contact with others

This virus infects human in limited way and currently no vaccine that can prevent the disease. Until January 22, 2020, although there is no infected person in Jakarta, but Health Department anticipates it by building synergy with Health Ministry.

In this case, they cooperate to:

1. Activate the thermal scanner at the state entrance

2. Distribute the circular alert to Novel Coronavirus or severe pneumonia to hospitals, health centers (Puskemas), and health clinics to increase people's awareness. Also, preparing personal protective equipment (APD) according to standards, improving health workers' competence and manging the referral flow of patients suspected of severe pneumonia due to Novel Coronavirus.

3. Educate citizens about Novel Coronavirus through electronic media and social media

As for vigilance and preventive measures that can be done to avoid pneumonia trasmission due to Novel Coronavirus, here are some suggestions from Health Department:

1. For residents with symptoms of fever, cough, shortness of breath, and have just returned from the infected country within 14 days before being sick, please seek treatment immediately at the nearest Puskesmas or hospital. Provide information to doctors and health workers about your travel history.

2. Apply cough ethics (covering mouth / nose when sneezing and coughing with tissue).

3. Use a mask if you have pain with symptoms of respiratory tract illness (fever, cough, flu) and get the treatment immediately.

4. Be sure to wash your hands frequently, especially after coughing or sneezing, before and after preparing food, before eating, after using the toilet, and after caring for animals.

5. Wash your hand with running water and soap and rinse about 20 seconds. If no water is available, you can use hand sanitizer that contains of 70-80 percent alcohol.

6. If you are sick, reduce activities outside and limit the contact with others.
