West Jakarta Needs Land for Cemetery

Limited land availability in West Jakarta makes local cemetery sub-department needs new land for cemetery. From 15 existing cemeteries in the municipality, all of them are almost full. Thus, the residents who have lands are expected to sell them to be used as cemeteries.

“At this time, almost all cemeteries are full. Cemeteries’ land widening is hard to be done because next to them are settlements. The available grave land is only in Tegal Alur Public Cemetery (TPU),” stated Head of West Jakarta Cemetery Sub-Department, Muhammad Yuswardi, Monday (9/29).

According to Yuswardi, due to limited cemetery land, the heirs of deceased agreed to bury their family members in the same hole. This is happened in some cemeteries, one of them is Utan Jati TPU in Joglo.

“Due to limited cemetery’s land, the family who wish to bury their family members kindly willing to bury them by overlap way,” he said.

In addition, Yuswardi also told that his department is currently recording the data of thousands of graves which not being maintained and rent not being paid to be re-used.
