“There should be a bold policy to tackle congestion in Jakarta that is getting worse. There must be coercion to use public transports and apply vehicle restriction,” stated Ellen Tangkudung, a transportation expert from the University of Indonesia, Wednesday (11/12).
According to Tangkudung, vehicle restriction is a must and it must be done gradually. Thus, she supports if the restriction was applied first to motorcycle since the growth of motorcycle in Jakarta is reaching 1,000 units a day, while car is 400 units per day.
Motorcycle Restriction, Free Double-Decker Bus is Prepared“If the government remained focused on improving public transports, congestion will be difficult to overcome because it must be accompanied with policies which nature is coercion. If you rely on public transports change, that’s difficult. Motorcycles as well as cars are already too many,” she uttered.
Even so, Tangkudung urges Jakarta Provincial Government to conduct socialization first before the policy is implemented. In addition, there should be also adjustment on public transports additional in lieu of the transfer.
“There should be more free buses, likewise with TransJakarta buses. This policy is applied ahead of ERP implementation,” she said.
Indeed, starting upcoming December motorcycle is prohibited to pass on Jalan Medan Merdeka Barat until HI Roundabout for 24 hours. For its implementation, coordination is currently being done with the City Police.
