Anies Wants MRT Phase 2A to Create Kota Tua as Economic Center Based on Mass Transportation

The Jakarta Provincial Government is collaborating with the Sumitomo Mitsui Construction Company - Hutama Karya Joint Operation (SMCC-HK JO), to recontinue the construction of the 6.3-kilometer Phase 2 A (CP203) MRT lane (Bundaran HI - Kota). It was realized by the signing of a cooperation contract between PT. MRT Jakarta with SMCC-HK JO at Taman Fatahillah, Taman Sari, West Jakarta, on Tuesday (4/20).

Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan disclosed the cooperation had signaled the capital's determination to soon perfect the ideal integrated transportation system. It was realized by building various areas that adequately connected as it involved various elements such as regional and central government, elements of regional and state-owned enterprises, as well as private sectors.

"All of that is in one effort to build the Kota Tua area thus this area is part of the future of Jakarta. That's why I want to express my gratitude and appreciation that this signing is a form of the second phase of the Jakarta MRT lane. Hopefully this place can truly become one unit, that Jakarta is a central economic area, as the North and South have been integrated and it is based on mass public transportation," he disclosed.

City Determines Locations for MRT Kota-Ancol Barat Corridor Development

He also explained that the city government had begun to transform the type of building from Car-oriented Development to Transit Oriented Development. One of the backbone of this effort was transportation mode facilities that had mass carrying capacity, such as the MRT. Aside that, it also had an important role not only to connect mobilization between residents and facilitate economic activity, but also to be a tool to foster new culture, habits and discipline, especially when all parties were starting to rise from the coronavirus.

"This is a booster for optimism for all of us thus Jakarta can be equal in position with the big cities in the world. Let us take this opportunity to specifically thank all those involved. By so, we can feel how easy the availability of public transport is to reach all areas, and this marks the progress of a city and for its residents, and marks the efficiency of daily spending on transportation costs," he added.

He furthered that the CP203 contract package was part of the Phase 2A construction of the Jakarta MRT from Bundaran HI to Kota. In overall, it had a total track length of around 12.3 kilometers, from Bundarain HI to West Ancol. PT. MRT Jakarta President Director, William Sabandar also explained that the SMCC-HK JO joint agreement contract would work on two underground stations, namely Glodok Station and Kota Station, as well as underground tunnels from Mangga Besar to Kota Tua, along 1.4 kilometers. The total cooperation contract was valued at around Rp 4.6 trillion with a construction period of 72 months (September 2021 - August 2027)

"The operational target of the MRT from Harmoni to Kota, which is the 2nd segment of Phase 2A, is August 2027. As for the segment 1 of Phase 2A, from Bundaran HI to Monas, will operate in April 2025," he expressed.

He also explained that the MRT Phase 2A was in accordance with the Governor's vision and the regional government plan to reorganize and develop the Kota Tua area to Sunda Kelapa as a cultural heritage area and a tourism area that was managed with the best quality.

"Thanks Mr. Governor who has given us full direction and support in carrying out the project, including all stakeholders who assist and implement this strategic program. We apologize and ask for understanding to the communities that will be affected by this project over the next few years. We ask for your understanding and support for a better city," he concluded.

As for the information, the signing moment was attended by Japanese Ambassador to Indonesia, Kanasugi Kenji; SMCC-HK JO Representative, Satoshi Tanimoto; JICA Representative, Shigenori Ogawa; PT. MRT Jakarta Construction Director, Silvia Halim; Jakarta Transportation Agency Head, Syafrin Liputo; and West Jakarta Mayor, Uus Kuswanto.
