Anies Ensures Water Quality in Islands is as good as Mainland

Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan, continued his visit to Thousand Islands, on Friday (4/30).

It is important, as the provision of drinking water sources on the island with SWRO and BWRO

On that occasion, he was directly reviewing the operation of the communal Wastewater Treatment Plant (IPAL) and Sea Water Reverse Osmosis (SWRO) on Kelapa Dua Island.

He disclosed the function of this communal IPAL is to convert the wastewater of the islanders into water that meets quality standards, before being discharged into the sea, thus it does not cause environmental pollution. As for the SWRO is an ordinary reverse osmosis system to convert seawater into clean water for community activities. On several other islands, for instance, Lancang Island has become Brackish Water Reverse Osmosis Osmosis (BWRO), which is a tool that functions to process brackish water into drinking water.

According to him, the provision and operation of the two water treatment plants also aimed at ensuring that residents get basic necessities, namely water quality that is as good as most Jakarta residents, especially those on the mainland. Thus it will create a feeling of fairness in all areas of Jakarta.

"It is important, as the provision of drinking water sources on the island with SWRO and BWRO, or domestic wastewater treatment through IPAL aims to meet basic needs, namely good water quality for residents (especially in Thousand Islands). Thus residents on land (Jakarta) and at sea (Thousand Islands) have the same quality of life," he explained, quoted by Jakarta PPID's press release.

He also appreciated the operation of IPAL, especially officers on Kelapa Island who used a very simple, yet effective, indicator method to ensure that the treated water met quality standards and could be channeled into the sea, using a small pond filled with fish.

"It is interesting to see how to ensure that water is safe or not before it is disposed of, that is, it is used first for the fish ecosystem, and if the fish is alive and well, the water can be channeled into the sea," he explained.

By so, he was optimistic that the basic needs of residents were met, moreover it could attract tourists to visit as the environment was clean and the availability of clean water, as well as drinking water.

"We must meet their (tourists) needs, one of which is water and of course this clean water and waste management installation may also advance the tourism sector," he added.

Thousand Islands Water Resources (SDA) Sub-agency, Hendri utterred that IPAL development in Thousand Islands were capable of processing waste water to 70 meters cubic per day. Then SWRO had supplied clean water to 100 houses on Kelapa Dua Island.

"The point is the IPAL was built thus people do not dispose of their waste water into the sea as it will cause pollution," he closed.
